Highly Recommended NYC Autism Therapist [Available Now]

Maybe you’ve always felt different but could never quite put your finger on why. Or maybe you’ve long known (or suspected) that you’re neurodivergent and are beginning to explore what the unmasking process looks like for you.

If this sounds familiar, we’re here for you. At Authentically Living Psychological Services, our NYC autism specialist offers a holistic, integrative space for high-achieving AuDHD women to heal from burnout and embrace a stronger sense of self.

Meet our NYC autism specialist

Dr. Lauren Mahoney

I'm Dr. Lauren Mahoney, and I work with neurodivergent folks who are tired of contorting themselves to fit a world that wasn't built with them in mind. I have a uniquely diverse background that spans working with the neurodivergent community, nursing, and neuroscience, which have all contributed to the holistic lens I use in therapy. I enjoy exploring how the mind, body, and relationships all contribute to our well-being.

I’m especially passionate about supporting AuDHD people, especially teens and women who are burnt out from masking and are interested in exploring the aspects of their identity that have been overlooked. No matter what particular struggles you’re navigating, I bring a warm, directness, and real curiosity about how your particular mind works.

  • Credentials: Post-Doctoral Psychologist (NY) #P139681, Certified Grief-Informed Professional #563874, Certified Mental Health & Nutrition Clinical Specialist (In Progress), Advanced Training in School Neuropsychology (In Progress)

  • Specialty Areas: AuDHD, grief & loss, illness, teens & young adults, women’s issues, perinatal mental health, anxiety & depression, low self-esteem & identity development, substance use

Common areas we support neurodivergent people with

  • The bone-deep exhaustion that follows a "successful" social day

  • Realizing in adulthood that your experience has an actual name

  • Sensory overwhelm from fluorescent offices, subway lights, and small talk you didn't sign up for

  • The grief of looking back at a younger you who tried so hard to seem normal

  • Burnout that no amount of sleep, supplements, or vacation time seems to touch

  • Friendships and relationships that feel one-sided, confusing, or draining

  • An executive functioning rhythm that oscillates between hyperfocus and near-catatonia

  • The weight of your desire to unmask while also recognizing that it’s kept you safe and “functional”

What sets our practice apart from other NYC autism therapy providers

  • No waitlist. Get support when you actually need it, not at some undefined point in the future.

  • Neurodiversity-affirming philosophy. No fixing, no smoothing, no pathologizing—just learning and embracing your specific brain.

  • An integrative approach weaving behavioral insight with somatic, relational, and existential depth.

  • Online sessions across New York, New Jersey, and PsyPact states so you can get support from where you feel most comfortable.

  • A specialty in late-identified adults, high-masking teens, and caregivers holding it all together.

  • A boutique, intentional practice. You're a whole person here, not a case number.

What to expect from the therapy process

Step 1. A free 15-minute consultation

Step 2. Initial intake session

Step 3. Ongoing collaborative sessions

We start with a low-stakes call to see if we fit before you commit to the process. This is also a chance for you to ask any logistical questions you may have.

Your first full session is spent getting to know your story, your sensory world, your relationships, and what you hope to get out of our work together.

From there, we meet weekly or bi-weekly to explore what's coming up for you, unpack old patterns, and build a relationship with yourself that feels less performative and more genuinely you.
